EAR OF DIONYSUS
The Ear of Dionysius , or Denis, is a symbol of the city of Syracuse. It ‘ an artificial cave inside the Latomia of Heaven, not far from the Greek Theatre . The cave is about 23 meters high and varying in width from 5 to 11 meters , enters into the rock about 65 meters , according to an S-shape
Many legends that revolve around the cave . It is said that the tyrant Dionysius dug the cave to lock up the prisoners , and then lurking inside a hollow top , he could hear the speeches. The first to use the phrase ear of Dionysus was apparently Caravaggio in 1608 he went to Syracuse together with the historical Vincenzo Mirabella , and set his own cave painting The Burial of Saint Lucia .
The particular shape of the cave actually produces an amazing sound effect , being able to amplify sounds up to about 16 times , and is also expected to own this cavity located below the top of the Greek theater acoustics of the theater.
